My Trek to Panwali Kantha from Rishikesh – A Hidden Heaven in the Himalayas

Introduction

My Youtube Video

If you love mountains, nature, and peace, then you must visit Panwali Kantha trek. It’s a beautiful and quiet place in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand. I recently went on this trek, starting from Rishikesh, and it turned out to be one of the best trips of my life.

This blog is about my full journey – how I went there, what I saw, what you should pack, the best time to go, and why Panwali Kantha is so special. If you are planning a peaceful Himalayan trek with amazing views, this guide is for you!

Starting from Rishikesh

I started my journey from Rishikesh, a popular town on the banks of the holy Ganga River. Known as the Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh is also the starting point for many treks in Uttarakhand.

From Rishikesh, I took a shared cab to a place called Ghuttu in the Tehri Garhwal district. The drive took around 7–8 hours and passed through beautiful mountain roads, rivers, and forests. Ghuttu is a small, quiet village and is one of the starting points for the Panwali Kantha trek.

Day 1: Ghuttu to Panwali Kantha Base

  • Distance: Around 16–17 km

  • Time Taken: 6–7 hours

The trek began early in the morning. The weather was fresh and cool. The first part of the trail went through small villages and green farms. I saw locals working in their fields and kids waving at us with smiles.

As we climbed higher, we entered a forest full of oak and rhododendron trees. These trees are very common in this region and give a lovely feeling of walking through a fairytale forest.

After about 4–5 hours of walking, we came out of the forest and reached the open meadows, known as Bugyals in local language.

Reaching the Bugyal – Panwali Kantha Meadows

The first view of Panwali Bugyal was magical. I saw wide open grasslands, small streams, distant snow-covered mountains, and total silence. The only sounds were of birds and the wind. The air felt so clean, and the sky was so blue!

We set up our tent near a water stream and had a simple meal – roti, sabzi, and hot tea. At night, the sky was full of stars. It was cold, but very peaceful. I slept inside the tent with a smile on my face.

Day 2: Hike to the Top – The Kantha Ridge

On the second morning, we climbed a little higher to reach the Kantha Ridge, which is the highest point of the trek. From here, you can see some of the most famous Himalayan peaks, including:

  • Kedarnath Dome

  • Chaukhamba Range

  • Mandani Parbat

  • Even parts of the Gangotri peaks

The view was unbelievable. It felt like I was standing in front of a huge painting. The rising sun made the snow glow with orange and pink colors. I sat there in silence for a long time, just feeling thankful.

Spiritual Energy of the Place

There’s something very special about Panwali Kantha trek. It’s not just a beautiful place, it also has spiritual energy. This trail was once used by sages and pilgrims on their way to Kedarnath, as part of the old Char Dham Yatra route.

Some locals believe that Lord Shiva himself walked through these meadows. You don’t have to be religious to feel the energy. The place feels very calm and powerful at the same time.

Nature and Wildlife

If you love nature and wildlife, you will enjoy this trek even more. I saw:

  • Colorful Himalayan Monal birds

  • Some mountain goats and sheep

  • Signs of leopards (but no actual sighting, which is good!)

Also, if you love photography, the views are perfect for photos – clouds in the valleys, mountain peaks, green meadows, and starry skies.

Different Routes to Panwali Kantha

There are a few different ways to reach Panwali Kantha:

  1. From Ghuttu (Tehri Garhwal): This is the route I took.

  2. From Triyuginarayan (Rudraprayag): A slightly longer route, but very scenic.

  3. From Gaurikund (on the way to Kedarnath): You can go from here if you’re doing the Kedarnath trek too.

You can also go from one route and come back from another, depending on your time and plan.

Best Time to Visit Panwali Kantha

  • April to June: Best time for clear skies, green meadows, and rhododendron flowers.

  • September to November: Great time for snow mountain views and golden grass.

  • December to March: Full of snow, but only for experienced trekkers.

  • Avoid July–August: It rains a lot, and the trail becomes slippery.

What to Pack for the Trek

Make sure you carry the right things to stay safe and comfortable:

  • Good quality trekking shoes

  • Warm clothes (especially for night)

  • Raincoat or poncho

  • Torch or headlamp

  • Power bank and camera

  • Snacks and energy bars

  • First aid kit and personal medicines

  • Reusable water bottle and light backpack

Important Tips

  1. Start early each day to avoid bad weather in the afternoon.

  2. Travel light, but don’t forget essentials.

  3. Respect nature – no plastic, no loud music.

  4. Hire a local guide – they know the best routes and stories.

  5. There’s no mobile network – enjoy the digital detox.

What I Felt on This Trek

This trek was not just a trip for me – it felt like a healing journey. In the city, we are always running, always busy. But in Panwali Kantha, time slows down. You feel your heartbeat, your breath, and the wind.

I met some local shepherds, who live simple lives and are always ready to share food and stories. Their kindness reminded me that happiness doesn’t need much.

How To Get Fit For The Panwali Kantha Trek

Getting fit before the Panwali Kantha Trek is very important to enjoy the journey and handle the altitude easily. Follow these simple fitness tips and preparation steps to make your trekking experience smooth and enjoyable:

1. Start Cardio Training

Begin light cardio workouts such as jogging, brisk walking, running, or cycling at least 4–6 weeks before the trek. This helps increase your stamina and prepares your lungs for long-distance walking in the mountains.

2. Strengthen Your Legs and Core

The Panwali Kantha trail includes steep climbs and descents. Add squats, lunges, and step-ups to your daily routine. If possible, practice climbing stairs or short hikes with a backpack to build endurance.

3. Practice Trekking With a Backpack

Carry a small backpack (4–6 kg) during your walks. This helps your body adjust to the weight you’ll carry during the trek and improves balance.

4. Focus on Breathing Exercises

Do yoga or pranayama to improve your lung capacity. Deep breathing exercises are especially helpful when trekking at high altitudes where oxygen levels are lower.

5. Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthy

Drink plenty of water every day and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein. Avoid junk food and alcohol before the trek as they reduce stamina and recovery power.

6. Get Proper Rest Before Trek

Take at least 7–8 hours of sleep daily and avoid overtraining just before your journey. A fresh and well-rested body performs better on the mountains.

7. Mental Preparation Matters

Trekking is not only about physical strength but also mental endurance. Stay positive, patient, and enjoy the beautiful trail instead of rushing.
